A New Room

Our big girl, H, has been in need of an update for her room for a while now.  She’s 12 now and I really wanted her to have a pre-teen room she could be proud of.  This has taken me a long time but I took some big steps recently to get where we want it to be.  I’m finally ready to show you the semi-finished product.

I guess my inspiration started when I found these two pieces at a horse show and I gasped when I saw their crazy price tags.

This cute peace sign was $95!!!

If you can’t see that price tag, it says $125!!!

As much as I wanted to go home with both of them, there was NO WAY I was willing to pay either one of those prices.  I’m way too frugal for that.  I left there thinking that they were now my inspiration because I knew I could make them!  And make them I did!

I started with the letter and decided I wanted to make one for H.  She ended up helping me with the project and she was so proud when we finished.

I got a large piece of plywood from Home Depot and found a font I wanted to use on the computer.  I printed out a large H on a piece of paper and used it to draw the H on the plywood.

Our neighbor, at the time, across the alley is awesome with woodworking and I asked him to cut this out for me.  I got some stain from Home Depot and painted it the color I was wanting.

I found the stones and extra pieces at Hobby Lobby for very cheap.

In no time at all, we had a beautiful letter to hang on H’s wall.

That whole project cost me about $30 and I was so proud to save about $90 off of the original price tag!!

When we moved in to our house, H’s room had a color scheme on the walls we were not big fans of.  Pink and orange are not really our flavor.

I knew we needed to make a change but it took me a while to make the right color choice.  I started with this color but I knew it would make her room too dark.  Good thing I only bought the sample size.

I found a new color that matched her bedding and was a bit more toned down.  It was a winner!

In just a few days, between nap times and bed times, I had the paint on the wall.  Every time I walked in to the room, I was more and more excited for her to see it!

Please excuse the few things on the bed.  I wanted to get a picture before she came home to see it. :)

Next to the window is a vinyl clock on the wall.  Here is a better picture of the clock.

I found these paper lanterns in the party section at Hobby Lobby for about $5.

Here’s the sign I made using the inspiration of the $95 painting I saw.  Yes, the expensive painting is better, but this cost me about $16 and I’m much more proud than I would have been if I had spent $95!  All of the supplies came from Hobby Lobby.  Are you seeing a trend here.  I love that place!

I happened to be at Hobby Lobby at the right time a few months ago.  I found a zebra mirror that was regularly priced at $150 and because it had a little bit of damage, it was marked down to $49.  I looked at it and thought, “That mirror would look great with a little paint touch up.”  I went home with it and here it is on her wall.

The zebra lamp is a garage sale redo I talked about in this post.  I still love it but I don’t know if I love it right next to the zebra mirror.  It might be moved to a different place in the room.

She was really happy when she saw her new room for the first time and I still have a few things to do, but it’s a big change and I’m happy with the direction the room has taken.

I’m definitely open to more ideas for things I can do in here.  Please share if you have any ideas.  I have another small wall that needs something on it.  I’m thinking of a picture wall, but I’m still undecided.

This is also another sign that I’m getting back in the swing of doing things I enjoy even though I now have two little ones instead of just one.  I love that feeling of accomplishment.  It just drives me to do more around our house (AKA my office!).  :)
