The boys are getting ready to start sharing a room and I needed something extra to add to the decor of the room. When I was pregnant with Langston three years ago, we decided to do his room in vintage baseball. I’ve carried that theme on, even though we have moved in to a different house since then.
I wanted to find a DIY wall project that would make a statement and I knew a baseball scoreboard would be just what they needed. I’ve wanted to make one for a really long time, but never took the time to actually get it done.
That all changed last weekend!
I loaded kids up and headed to Home Depot for some plywood and paint.
I found the thinnest piece I could find and I think it cost me about $12. I had the guys at Home Depot cut it down for me to make it 5 feet by 4 feet.
When I got home, I painted the entire piece of plywood with an off white color. I’m not sure of the exact color because it’s left over from a previous project.
Once I got that painted and dried, I started marking pencil lines and then applying my painters tape. I then got on my Silhouette and started cutting letters in vinyl. Before actually sticking them to the wood, I placed them in their appropriate spots, to make sure everything would fit.
Here is the board before sticking the inning numbers down.
Once all of the letters and numbers were in their correct places on the board, I painted over the entire board with a green color called Adirondack.
After that dried, I pulled up each piece of vinyl I had cut with my Silhouette machine. Of course, there was still a LOT of touch ups that needed to be done.
This was by far the most time consuming part of the project, but it had to be done. I used a small brush and cleaned up all of the edges of each letter. Some areas were worse than others, this being one of them.
The last thing left to do was to create the score tiles.
I found this piece of craft wood at Hobby Lobby and with my 40% off coupon, it cost me about $4.00. I was able to use my Skil saw and cut 9 tiles out that were each 3 5/8″ wide.
Using the same process I did with the board, I painted the craft wood with the off white color, cut numbers out in vinyl using my Silhouette machine, stuck them to the tiles, and then painted over them with the adirondack color.
On my scoreboard, I used carpet tacks as nails to hang my tiles. I like these because they are black and very short, but still thick. I hammered them in 3/4″ below the white line.
On each of my tiles, I drilled a small hole in the middle of the top part of the tile for the twine to go through.
I pushed the twine through the front of the tile and then tied a knot on the front. The loop on the back was used to hang on the nail.
And now for the finished product! It’s ready to be hung on the wall and I’m in love with it!!
I think it might be my most favorite project I’ve ever done. I hope it lasts in their room for a long long time! However, if it doesn’t, Jeff loves it so much, he might want it in our bedroom.
{UPDATE}: It’s hanging in their newly shared boy room and I love it!
Here are a couple of tutorials from girls who did almost the same thing:
