Sometimes….

I had the greatest Mother’s Day and while I hate that it’s taken me three days to talk about it, I still want to get it out there.  It was great!  It was so great because we were LAZY!  We went to church, came home and ordered chinese food for delivery, and laid around all. day. long.

I don’t have one picture to show you anything from the day.  Bad blogger.  But, that just shows how lazy we were.  It was wonderful!

Things have been pretty uneventful around here since then and there really just hasn’t been much to talk about.

Until today.

We had a play date with our friends at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and I was excited to go somewhere new, for a change.  Langston was at Mother’s Day Out, so it was just me, the little guy, and our stroller.

The trail we walked was a little over a mile and parts of it were uphill.  Considering the fact that my exercise, for the past 29 weeks, has consisted of chasing little boys around and carrying Riverson up and down the stairs, it was a work out for me!  You forget how much harder things can be when you are carrying around a whole lot of few extra “el-bees”.

After thinking about making another loop for about 2.2 seconds, we decided it was a much better idea to go let the kids play on the playground.

And that’s where it happened.

This.

Yes, I gasped when I saw it, too!

A sweet little boy, who looked to be about 15 months old, was giving Riverson lots of hugs and Riverson wasn’t really hugging back but he wasn’t pushing him away, either.  I guess since he wasn’t pushing him away, the hugging continued.  Eventually, the little boy got Riverson off balance and he stepped backward.

His one step backward took him off of the sidewalk and the dirt was about 4 inches lower.  As his left foot when on to the dirt, he started to fall forward, but tried to catch himself.  His left hand went in to the dirt and his right hand was on the sidewalk.  That meant the edge of the sidewalk was right in the middle of him.

His head jerked down, and even though he tried to catch himself, the 4 inch difference between the top of the dirt and the top of the sidewalk did not help things.

His forehead went right in to the edge of the sidewalk and I didn’t realize it until I could run to scoop my crying baby up.  I saw the whole thing take place but couldn’t tell if he had actually hit the sidewalk until I lifted him in the air and saw this GIGANTIC goose egg.

Y’all, within minutes, it looked like he had a horn on his head.  It was awful and I felt terrible that my baby was in so much pain.

We stayed long enough to get him settled down and relaxed again, and then made our way home.  I did make a stop at Sonic so he could have some juice.  A little treat makes things feel better for me, sometimes.  I figured it might be true for him, too.  :)

Thankfully, when we got home, he was acting perfectly normal and I felt like it was safe enough to let him take a nap.

As of about 4:00 this afternoon, the knot seems to have gone down quite a bit but I’m sure a NASTY bruise will be there to take it’s place.

It’s honestly a good thing I saw this happen on Langston, before.  I might have been making a bee line to our doctor’s office , or even the ER.  I had never seen a knot that big.

Thankfully, it could always be worse.

Sometimes, it’s just good to be thankful.

  2. Omg, poor little guy! I am so happy he’s ok though… It’s the worst watching them get hurt…. Extra kisses . :(

  3. Ohhh poor Langston! That looks so painful. I’m glad he’s okay and hopefully the bump and bruise go away soon.

    • Yeah, yeah. Riverson, Langston…they look too much alike! Thank goodness a GIRL is on the way so the big fancy bows will help me know who I’m talking about! LOL

  4. Poor baby. That looks like it hurt. But I can imagine. I think it’s worse for us Mamas then it is for the babies. Hope he’s feeling better soon.

  6. I feel your pain! My granddaughter learned to walk before she learned to crawl. We didn’t think it was a big deal but it actually was because when she fell, and she fell often, she didn’t know how to catch herself! She just went straight down! We could see her going but we couldn’t get there in time. She had goose eggs like that on her head constantly!

Now the second grandchild is starting to walk and we were all freaked out thinking about how awful it was with the first. But he crawled first so he seems to know how to catch himself when he falls, thank goodness. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad.

But it’s horrible seeing those goose eggs on your child. Sounds like both of you were troopers!

  1. [...] Yesterday.  My little guy took a nasty spill and the knot on his head was pretty unbelievable.  You can check it out here.  For all of you who DID see it yesterday, I’m happy to report that the knot has gone down and looks much better.  The bruise is yucky, but I’m just happy he’s acting perfectly normal!
