You sure wouldn’t know from this picture that’s she’s been a sick little girl, but she sure has.  Little did I know after our fun Sunday, we’d be making another trip to the emergency room!

trip to the emergency room

This is how our week has played out:

Tuesday

  • Coughing was worse, but I assumed it was all just part of it.
  • I posted this post on Facebook:
  • trip to the ERAmong the 25 comments on that post, there was mention of whooping cough.  I googled it {bad idea} and it scared me to death.

Wednesday

  • I called our pediatrician’s office first thing in the morning and got an appointment that morning.
  • RSV test was negative but lungs sounded yucky.  We left the doctor’s office with a plan to do breathing treatments twice a day and see how she was doing Thursday or Friday.

This just looks pitiful. :(

  • I headed straight to my chiropractic friend’s office for an adjustment of Brantley. {It was also mentioned a couple of times in that facebook status up there.

Brantley’s getting adjust by Caleb, aka Dr. Braddock. :)

  • While talking to him right before we left his office, Brantley had another coughing fit that caused her to vomit all over me, herself, and the office floor.  Not fun and so sad!

Thursday

  • Pediatrician called to check on Brantley and I explained there really wasn’t any improvement, even after the breathing treatments.
  • Pediatrician wanted her back in the office to listen to her chest.
  • At the appointment, our doctor didn’t like the sound of her breathing or coughing and sent us on to the hospital.
  • The plan was to get a chest x-ray, a deep suction, a Pertussis {whooping cough} test, and an RSV test.

When we got to the hospital, the ER doctor said right away we were not dealing with whooping cough because a baby at her age would have a fever and would be more likely to turn blue.  Brantley did not have a fever.  {Thank goodness!}

She didn’t feel good but she sure looked cute! :)

He didn’t even want to do a chest x-ray for her but did think we needed a deep suction.

I had no idea what a deep suction really entailed but as the ER nurse started explaining things and showing us the tubes and tools they had to use, I started getting nervous.

Jeff must have seen it in my face because he told me it would probably be better if he stayed with Brantley and I left the room.

I did and I’m still beating myself up about that decision.

I stood outside of the door and cried while I listened to her scream and cry.  They had to stick a small tube down her nose to make her cough and get out as much of the mucous as they could.

I really just wanted to run in there, scoop her up, and say “Forget it” but I’m glad I didn’t.  That deep suction was just what she needed.

She was able to eat better and they sent us on home with a diagnosis of Bronchialitis.  Her lungs sounded clear and although she was still stuffy in her nose, we could control that at home with the suctioning.

It’s been a rough week, but we are so thankful for all of the prayers, calls, texts, and emails from our family and friends.  As of yesterday, I think we’ve turned a corner and she’s a much happier girl.

  1. How awful to have to stand out in the hall and listen to that!  I would have had to do the exact same thing.  I’m glad it was worth it and that’s she’s doing so much better.
